I'm sorry I haven't responded before now. My DSL was down for about 30
hours!
The hoop separated because I evidently didn't tighten it enough (operator
error.) I had been working with the large wooden square hoop. It's hard to
get tight anyway and I guess my fingers and hands were tired from working
with it all day the day before. I don't have a blister, but my fingers sure
are tender.
I was close enough to the machine to get it stopped quickly enough to not
even have a ruined project. I did the rest of the job using the screw driver
to tighten the hoop. No more separated hoops, but a few urgent needs for bio
breaks! ;) My shop is in a building out back. There are no water-related
amenities.

Roland,
Since my fingers are arthritic, I use a screw driver to tighten the round
hoops and a needle nose to tighten the rectangle hoop. So, I probably get
them more snug than necessary. But, at least they won't fall off!! LOL

I haven't broken a hoop yet, and I really 'reef' on them when
doing the heavy jackets and sweats...but I usually end up
with light pressure, hoop the article, then reach underneath and
finger tighten the nut until I can't turn it any more.
Probably you are breaking them by forcing the hoops together
  when it is too tight?

  Roland
