I also got the 5" round. After inserting the back of the cap and pulling taut, I manually hold the clamp down with one hand then use the other to cinch it tight. I am using the top clamp with the claws (as opposed to the flat round clamp). It doesn't look like the whole area is tight but where I need to sew, it seems to be fine. I place tearaway under the whole clamp (in other words, the backing is not clamped with the cap). The design I'm doing is a very small US flag along with lettering. Hope this helps! I also purchased it with the round attachment and I can't seem to get the hat clamped tight enough to sew. Mike
