they seem to be there just to be in the way.
Actually they provide protection for the needles when the bar is back.
and the reason the bar is notched is they felt, we needed more access to the
needles when changing them.
I have actually taken a slip from a report cover and keep it on mine.
it is easy to remove and keeps stuff from constantly catching on them.
