On just about most items you sew you would leave the presserfoot in it's far most down position. It's only when you start to sew thicker fabrics that you would want to consider raising your presserfoot height. As for the pocket clamp hoop, you don't want to put anything heavy in this hoop as it's grip is limited. Some customers have added micro aligator clamps to the front side to assist in the squeezing effect when sewing on something thick or heavy. Hope this helps.
