If it's on a polo shirt, I use 2 layers of cutaway. You may want to try that on a lab jacket if it's thin. If sewing on a lab jacket or oxford cloth material or similar to that, I also change my needle to a 65/9 sharp. That seems to help me a lot with small letters. The smaller needle usually gets my smaller letters looking as crisp as they can.
