In addion to what has been suggested...try taking the threadbreak sensor 
tube(the crome tube that runs across the front of the needlecase) and gently 
rotate it back and forth leaving it in a different position than when you 
started. The thread break sensor is very sensitive and given the age of your 
Big Red, it may be going bad and have to be replaced.
