  Debbie in Indiana,

Yes there is a Santa Claus,,,Wrong topic,,,Yes Dakota Collectibles does offer
their designs in CND format. My wife and I have always been glad we requested
that format for our CD.

This is always going to be a subject that crops up every couple of weeks or
so when a new party enters the A.U.G. scene. (That's "Amaya User's Group")
One could always search through the archives because we've all asked this
question before.. ( CND vs. OFM vs. EXP formats?)
Once you have gotten a little experience under your belt in the digitizing
or editing field, you'll quickly understand the pro's and con's of the
different formats.

    Mr. Analogy chimes in...
Let's see how this one flies, I just thought of it...

A file that is saved in the OFM format ( used to be CND ), can be thought
of as being similar to watching your favorite movie LIVE and in person. At any
time you can shout out to the director that you'd like to see the wardrobe
changed, or have an actor switched out, or change the scenery, and even the
script as many times as you like - because you are working with the real deal.

A file that has been saved in the EXP format would be considered similar to
watching your favorite movie on a VHS tape or DVD. What you see and hear
should be the same as watching it live but if you speed it up or slow it down,
the overall experience is definitely not the same... and you definitely can't
converse with the director.

Whatta' you think? Am I far off?
Remember it's late on a Sunday night.

Thanks Veena, I thought it was just a personal preference until you
explained it in such thorough detail. Thanks for all the info...that's how us
newby's learn !! I just hope Dakota and other great design companies use CND.
I know my digitizing software (Generations) does not import in or export to
CND. THANKS AGAIN!! Debbie in Indiana

        Hello Debbie and Ruth,

The reason I suggested Ruth to buy CND is that I believe it contains
more information than an EXP. If sometimes you want to use a portion of the
design, and you convert it to wireframe, it does not convert properly and has
more trims, extra unnecessary stitches etc. Also, it does not show what the
designer is thinking about when he digitizes.

The wireframe conversion is done algorithmically. I know that Balboa
Stitch company does provide designs in CND format since Lee Caroselli does use
Design shop for creating her designs(as I was told ). I took a class from her
and was really enlightened with digitizing. I was a newbie in the class trying
to learn embroidery, the red goddess and digitizing all at the same time. But
I got a lot of good and valuable information in that class. She talked about
how she gave a small design for a client in .ofm and the lady was able to zoom
it 200% and still stitch out properly without compromising quality. Have you
questioned yourself why most embroidery libraries put out a small size and a
large size and let you configure out a new size for the same design. If you
zoom an .EXP file I believe it compromises quality of the embroidery. I have
not done that, so I cannot tell you. But I tried out converting an .EXP file
to wireframe and reducing by 50% and sewing it out (puckered a lot, lost
registration, extra trims, extra stitches, stitched out like blah!. I did it
since the design was about 60,000 stitches and I wanted to do a sample before
doing it on the garment). I went back and sewed the same design in EXP with
out any changes, stitched out perfectly.

For a test, pick an exp file (simple one ) and convert it into
wireframe. Check and see how many extra trims you get and also the extra
stitches you get. Sew both the designs out and check out the difference.

I would definitely pick embroidery files in the order of OFM (first and
foremost choice - it definitely contains more data information reg the
embroidery file than any of the others - the format of the file I believe is
still a secret and hidden safely under lock and key by melco), CND and finally
EXP (least favorable one). I bought a book from Strawberry stitch company and
would have liked the book samples in CND or OFM format but got them in EXP. It
does not give much information even though, the author explains the examples in
the book).

If you want to know more about the format info, may be Jeff Banks could
pitch in to let us know.

In case you need to edit a design, EXP designs seem to corrupt worse
than a CND file.

It wasn't me that suggested not to purchase EXP designs, It was
Veena Viswanath that gave us that advise, you might ask her if she has a
reason from not doing EXP files, but I know I don't have the software that I
can work with the EXP as far as adding colors or going into the tree and doing
extra stuff, etc etc. I have no problem stitching them out, I was only
wondering when you buy designs and they ask what format, which would be the
best.

Ruth, I was kind of confused when you said not to purchase
designs in EXP format. I have Generations digitizing and it actually
recommends transporting to EXP when using any MELCO machine. I have also
purchased Dakota designs in EXP and never had a problem with them...they
stitched out beautifully. Is there a reason you suggest not useing EXP?

                Ruth,

Ofm is best for the amaya. But you can work well with CND.
Don't get EXP.
