Hi Jim, I live in York and am totally blind. I don't know if you know Sue Atha, the rehab officer for York for visually impaired people, but she has mentioned to me before about this system.

Out of interest, can everyone around here the signs when they go off, or does it play the audio on the thob that the user carries around and so is pretty descrete?

Think I'll get in touch with the blind and partially sighted society and give it a try though.

Thanks

Peter

Hi Barry/Mark,

My name is Jim Doherty and I'm the coordinator for React talking signs in York. To answer a couple of your questions, we have approx 42 talking react signs throughout the city centre of York. The initial cost of the network was purchased by the York City Council. The lottery fund paid for the rest, I.e. project manager and key fobs. The key fobs are free to York residents who have a visual impairment. The fobs are distributed by the York Blind and Partially Sighted Society. They are also available from the York tourist information centre for those who are visually impaired, with a deposit.

For further information, contact York Blind and Partially Sighted Society on York 01904-636269.

Regards.
Jim.

Subject: [access-uk] way-finding systems for the new Norwich Bus Station FW:

Hi all

Mark Smith, Equipment and Information Centre advisor at Norfolk & Norwich
Association for the Blind, is investigating way-finding systems for the new Norwich Bus Station which underwent major re-development a couple of years
ago and now consists of a number of bays with poor signage, a large open
plan area and a generally noisy environment.

The local Passenger Transport Unit is arranging with RNIB for a
demonstration of the talking REACT signs which may help blind and partially
sighted bus passengers to navigate their way around the bus station. A
talking tactile map showing the layout of the bus station is also being
looked at. In order for the County Council to bid for the funding, they are
keen to know if there are any other local societies (particularly in East
Anglia) using this system.

Mark is aware of talking bus stops in Brighton, talking signs in Hampshire
and the REACT system in Birmingham, but wonders if there are others? He
would be interested to hear from any other local societies who have the
REACT system in their area. He would like to know

* About how the system operates

* if visually impaired people are charged for the key fobs, which activate
the talking signs.

* If blind or partially sighted people are charged, what are the charges?

* How the systems of issuing the key fobs is administered and if this is
undertaken by local societies or mobility shops?

Any feedback would be much appreciated

Thanks

Barry
