John, if I'm reading a long document such as a book in Note Pad, I usually
put a plus sign, or some such character which isn't likely to appear in the
document, where I finish reading and then do a control s to resave it. When
I want to start reading again from the point I left off, I just do a control
f and ask for the appropriate character, take it out, continue reading and
then repeat the process when I next want to stop. A bit rough and ready I
know, but it works for me.
