Hi Terry,
No probs, either e-mail me off-list with a phone number & I'll phone you, or
I'll mail you mine if you prefer.

  Hi
Would it be possible to contact you direct, to talk about the ergo
machine?

I really want to get the purchase of the laptop right.

  There are a number about.
I bought an Ergo Microlite with a 1.7 centrino processor from Sight &
Sound
that weighs 1.4 kg and has a claimed battery life of up to 6 hours,
although
I'm pretty happy with the 4 hours that I actually get. I purchased a
spare
battery at the time I got the laptop, but to be honest, haven't needed it
  yet.

It has a good selection of card slots, + DVD drive/CDRW drive on board,
but
doesn't have a floppy drive, I just bought an external USB floppy drive.
It
works like a dream with Jaws, but you would expect that if it comes from
Sight & Sound. Although the on-board speaker is cr*p, the sound card is
very good, with true duplex, so I can use it with J-Say too.

It's certainly worth a look, although, my only gripe, and it was a
surprise
to me, was that the folks at Sight and Sound didn't seem to know much
about
the machine, and were unable to offer me any support with it. There was
also no documentation in alternative format. It was just suggested that I
contacted Ergo direct... Must say, I was disappointed, I had always had
more than first class service from them. I think that if Mervyn had been
around he would have helped as it was he who suggested that particular
model - I was looking for a super lightweight to run J-Say. S&S sell, and
probably support, other Ergo models, the heavier ones, but don't carry the
Microlite as as a standard item.

I still reckon it was a good buy. It was also relatively cheap for the
weight and spec at about £1200 or so.

    Hi all
I'm taking up a new position next month, as a social worker for people
  with learning disabilities.

I will be needing a laptop to use in the office, and to carry around
when
  doing home visits.

I'm looking for something which is as light as possible.

I prefer the lay out of the Compaq laptop keyboard. Something with
1.5 -
  2g processor.

the main consideration is the weight.

I thought I heard that there were laptops whereby the base splits in
half,
i.e. you can leave behind, things like, CD-ROM, floppy, network adapters,
  etc.

Is there any machines out there that are fast, compatible with JFW, and
  very light?

Any assistance would be very very much appreciated.

    Thanks for reading.

    Best wishes

    Terry
