Could it be the lens being dirty? Not sure you could get at it, especially on a laptop but one of the CD player cleaner you can find in HIFI shops might help, worth a try anyway.

I have a toshiba laptop, I have noticed that the cd/dvd
player in it is getting very slow at copying, it sometimes
takes an hour to copy a tnauk cd on to my sd card for my
victor stream, if I use the netbook and my portable cd/dvd
writer to copy the cd's on to the sd cards, it takes
minutes, are there any settings in windows xp to speed up my
cd's performance or is it just a case that the cd is wearing
out? It has handled a lot of cd's over the years I have had
the laptop. I'm even noticing errors when I write to the cd
in the laptop.

Hi Adrian.

Well, all of them have a use, but if you want to remove any
of them, easy network and magic doctor are expendable, also
Samsung EDS which is a waste of time.  Most of the others
have fairly important functions, magic keyboard for instance
and easy display manager allow you to use the hotkeys and
control display settings.  Also, update plus gets drivers
and software updates for your machine. If you created a
recovery partition during your initial system setup,
recovery solution will be needed should you ever need to
restore your system to its previous backed up state.

If there is any other program your not sure about, please
let me know.

worked out which ones are really necessary and which ones

but he knows his own programmes at start-up and I think he
is an experienced computer user so I would hope he would
