Hi Andy,

I don't disagree with you about the noise on the Edirol, but you can get rid
of it completely with a good mic and preamp. Sound Professionals make a
very good powered preamp and mic, just for the Edirol. Now, I think it is
as quiet as the Zoom, except for the Zoom's noise on batteries. I have only
just received the preamp, but I will be demonstrating that on future
podcasts.

They all have their ups and downs, but I think for decent recorders, only
the Zoom or the Edirol should be considered. The DS50 can't record to Wav,
which is what I do all the time, then compress at the computer end, as the
Edirol's MP3 encoder is not that good either. But the DS50 annoys me,
because they advertise it as a podcasting machine, and I don't think it is
that good.

All the best

Hi Simon.

This is not really quite accurate. Yes, the Zoom Recorder does have a
slight hum which is only apparent while on batteries and when recording very

quiet sounds. Yes, I'd rather it was not there at all, but I've had the
Zoom for about four weeks now and cannot actually hear the hum on anything
that I've recorded. Normal background sounds will blank it out. As I said,

if you where trying to record total silence, while on batteries, then you
may hear it, if perhaps someone identified it firstly. Using balanced
microphones or an external power pack for the Zoom is reported to get rid of

this annoyance. I've also got the Olympus DS 50, which is also another very

good recorder. This however, does not record as mp3, as the Zoom does, but
most of us end up editing our recordings with GoldWave or Sound Forge
anyway, and it's a simple thing to convert to MP3 format. The DS50 will
play mp3 tracks, though unfortunately, the on-board speech will not read the

albums or titles out to you. The Zoom can take a 4gb card so will hold a
load of mp3 tracks, but likewise, accessing particular tracks would be very

difficult. I'd say that neither the Ederal, Olympus or Zoom would make a
good mp3 player, but if you are looking for a digital recorder, then it
would have to be the Zoom, then the Olympus and then the Ederal. I know
Steve will not agree with this, but I believe the Ederal's pre-amp creates
the most unwanted noise. If you visit the Blind Cool Tech list at:
http://www.blindcooltech.com/
and search for either of these models, you will find loads of demonstrations

that have been recorded as podcasts. If you are going to hand over several
hundred quid, then it would be worth checking some of these out beforehand.

If you require any more information regarding either the Olympus DS 50 or
the Zoom Recorder, please don't hesitate to get back to me.

Best wishes.
Andy
