I have sighted friends who actually come to me when they have problems with their phones as their knowledge is a lot less than mine.

as for some blind people not wanting to touch various things, i used to be petrified of the computer, I had the thing and used it but it was always in the back of my mind that something might go wrong!! I can't remember specifically when it happened but over the time I've slowly changed the way I think about things and now when something goes wrong I usually swear a lot and stick the thing in to a re-boot, as for consulting the manual, only do that as a last resort!!

My Mum is sighted and she was really nervous about the internet and i had to sit beside her whenever she went online, but no more, she's on the think the whole time now and not with me around most of the time!!

I do not agree with all you say Barbra. Again I am not being patronizing in any way but I have friends who are visually impaired, people I made friends with a very young age through boarding school and people who never went on to have any academic qualifications either because they had educational needs in adition to visual impairment or because of the time (1960s) where a poor quality of education was offered (particularly in southern Ireland) to visually impaired girls. Often some such people need a little more than playhing around with it themselves. Some people I know just won't touch one because they perceive it as too difficult. Now as for sighted people and mobile phones, then this is not the forum for discussion I know but there is the visual prompt of the letters on each key and forgive me but a blind person has to memorise this. I have a brother who is sighted and a teacher but is considerably more slow at writing text messages than myself now and would not even consider predictive text.

Hi Eleanor

I agree with much of what you are saying about Vodafone. However, I think it is a management problem. We can't blame the folks who work in the shops or man the phones if they don't know about TALKS because clearly they are not told about it.

As for training, I think most people find they can work out how to use TALKS just by having a play and experimenting by themselves. After all, if sighted people don't get mobile phone training then why should we expect it to be provided! You have to be brave and confident enough just to try things for yourself.

Vodafone

Agreed Barbra but when as the customer you do not know anything much then you are totally at their mercy. I was in the RNIB last year, around this time and was making enquiries about mobile phones with speech. looked at the one they sell and others they said culd have Talks put on them. Then they were holding one for some man and selling it 2nd hand. My offer was rejected out of hand which was crazy but his privilege. Then I was informed the RNIB had stopped handling the 2nd-hand sale for him. Anyway with the good knowledge of the ladies in the RNiB, I went off to Vodafone at Hammersmith. Nobody there knew anything about speech on mobile phones and at that time they did not have an N96 in to show me but took my details and said they would contact me. They did not of course. Then I went to my local Vodafone store and the man there was more than helpful, informing me he had just done one of these Talks for smeone only the week before. I was delighted and asked if I culd see the various models. Oh, he said, we only do Talks on one phone, the N95. he went on to say it was only possible under contract etc etc and they did not offer it on pay as you talk. Well I did not know any better. My contract was for £35.00 per month and what a job even getting that. I had to go in armed with my identity, Passport was essential, proof of address and then they investigated me and my creditworthyness. this was to take 24 hours but that turned in to 48 hours and eventually turned in to one week.

I am delighted to hear of this phone jackie has spoken about because I have many friends and please everyone do not misunderstand me, as I am not being patronizing in any way, but these people would not be able to take out a £35.00 contract per month. Now they have an opportunity of getting hold of a good phone with Talks and are not obliged to be using up hundreds and hundreds of minutes and texts per month. Some of my friends just like reading texts from people but do not feel able to text back. Indeed I am of the opinion, and again only a person opinion, but there should be some form of training, at least 10 hours say, on how to use a mobile phone with Talks for those who require it. Now for myself, I learned absolutely everything through free lists but there are some people who need time and a little effort, in other words, a few lessons on how to use the phone on a one to one basis. guess our social services departments and rehabilitation workers are too stretched as it is and do not have time for wht they would perceive as training in a luxuary comodity but an essential commodity these days.

Hi Jackie

It is indeed a great offer and thanks for passing it on. I just found in the past that Vodafone providing TALKS and actually getting someone who knew of the service were very different things. But you usually get there if you persevere!

Hi Barbara

If you are on Voda, call 191, but I don't know what the national equivalent is unless you look on the web or call 195.

I don't know the ins and outs of how long the offer has been on, or whether the phone is any good. I just thought passing it on might be of use to someone looking for something reasonable.

Hi Barbara

It was Vodafone who told me about it. They say to just go into any store
and ask.

Hi Jackie

That certainly is a good offer. The fun part will be finding someone in
Vodafone who actually knows about it!

Apologies for the cross-posting of this info, but thought anyone in
the hunt for a new phone might want to look at a promotion Vodafone
are offering at present.

According to the info I have been given, you can purchase the Nokia
6124 with Talks Standard for £90, which includes a £10 Pay-As-You-Talk
top-up.
The phone has a 2M camera, with Internet access, MP3 and all the usual
clobber.

I've never seen this, so honestly don't know how old it is or whether
it is particularly button friendly. But if it is a phone you are
looking for without paying over the odds, then it might do the job.
Vodafone send it away to have Talks loaded on it, and you generally
get it back within a week or so.

Hope this is of some use to any of you.
