Clive,

To know if your battery is low, just press the Sky button then press any
channel.  Still obvious.

Certainly when we select 103 we don't get AD but when we select 993 (no2
973), we do.

As for your other point, if you'd only ever see "channel number not
available" when you punch in a number and nothing happens, you're right,
it doesn't matter. If a failure would get another message if, say, your
remote batteries were low, then it's not so obvious, because you'd want
to know the difference.
