[access-uk] R: audible alternative for audio books?

Unfortunately I have no alternative to Audible to suggest but think you
shouldn't give up on what you have already bought. If Martin Wilshire's
suggestion doesn't work I would suggest contacting Audible direct. When I
had problems setting up the android audible ap they were almost too helpful
- ringing me twice from America.
I would start from the premise that the books you have bought are your
property and that making them unavailable for any reason is effectively
theft. I know with online content things aren't always that simple but at
the very least it should be them who have to justify it and refer you to the
relevant conditions which allow them to behave in the way they have.
Assuming you are in the end, able to get access to your library I'm a bit
mystified about the mp3 conversion which was possible under XP and is not
under Windows 7 or Linux. Is that because the conversion tool you were using
works under XP but not under the others? If the worse comes to the worst
isn't it possible to play the book on the computer and record it in mp3
format? Clumsy, but it works.
Some doubt was raised as to the legality of making an mp3 copy. Having
looked at Audible's conditions I can see nothing wrong with that - they
actually recommend that you make a copy once you have bought the book and
make no reference as to which format the copy should be in. It is always
possible of course, that conditions may have changed since I checked or
there may be others which I didn't find at the time.
Finally, I've found the android audible ap to be easy to use (much easier
than going to even the "accessible" site using the computer) because they
have had to keep things simple - I have the opening screen with all my
library titles on it and once the book has been downloaded to the phone I
need neither wi-fi nor a phone connection to read it. I expect the Iphone ap
is much the same.
None of this is what you were asking for but I hope it at least stops you
from giving up on accessing what is, after all, your own property.

Hello Everyone.
I have been a member of audible for many years now. when i was on XP, i
used to convert my audible books to MP3 to listen on my MP3 player. this
has worked very well if i didn't have an audible device to hand and i
wanted to listen to an audio book. however, ever since they got taken
over by amazon and usernames and passwords changed, i can no longer
access my history for all the titles i have spent the last 6 years
pourchasing from them, and even if i could i can't convert the books as
i am primarily using windows7 and linux. in short, does anyone have any
other source of downloadable audio books? i don't mind paying as long as
there is a decent selection hopefully comparable to audibles. audiogo
was an excellent site but they've now gone in to administration. i just
wish audible weren't so iffy and that they hadn't deleted every book i'd
ever bought from them without my consent... the only thing that will
make me stay with them is if i can convert books using windows7 as and
when i need to. as i'm paying for a book i should be able to if i don't
want to take a kindle to listen to books and just want to carry a small
discreet mp3 player. from what i've read this can't be done, but any
comments welcome on or off list.
