Thanks Barry, I'd totally forgot about this and it does indeed ring a bell.

Funny enough, just before reading your e-mail, I had one from Olympus customer 
support telling me that no, there was no kind of battery status. But I do seem 
to remember what you say as being correct.

  As far as I know, only when you turn it on and if the voice prompts are 
enabled, it will say battery level high, battery level medium or battery level 
low.  There may be a way of interrogating it, but I haven't come across it.
