sorry i didn't make it clear in my message that it was windows 10
anniversary edition that i installed last week.
i've played around with narrator a little including on the web and it
does work but i still don't think it is as good as any of the screen
readers i have on my computers which are, window-eyes, system access,
and NVDA.

yes i updated last week.
i had to do it the difficult way removing my speech drivers and using
NVDA to do it and then re-install them afterwards.
personally although narrator is much better than it used to be it certainly
isn't on a par with the dedicated screen readers yet.
but windows 10 i am very pleased with as it seems far more stable on the
windows 7 and 8 machines that i upgraded compared to how they were before.
-- but when there were more problems before i think it was the screen readers
causing those problems rather than the operating system.
i will mention one problem i had which wasn't easy to solve as i tried lots
of things before finding the solution by accident.
i was having problems with window-eyes not speaking context menus, combo
boxes on the web, and some tree views and i was trying all sorts of things to
correct it without success but then purely by accident i found what was
causing it.
i was having a look around in all the different "ease of access center"
settings and went into the section for setting up high contrast.
when i tabbed down the screen at the bottom i found a section labelled as
"other programs installed" which has a warning saying "running more than one
of these programs at a time might cause conflicts.
and in this section on my computer it shows two programs, jarva access bridge
which was ticked to allow it, and window-eyes which was not ticked which
obviously interfeers with window-eyes because as soon as i ticked window-eyes
everything started working correctly again.
so this obviously means that if there is more than one assistive technology
program installed on the computer windows 10 could interfeer with one of them
because it will automatically only give one of them full access and that will
be the first one in alphabetical order.

the answer now should be no to the first question and yes to the second.
when the windows 10 anniversary edition came out last week there was a
problem with the media creation tool that prevented people who had
window-eyes or jaws installed from installing the windows 10 anniversary
edition and the only way around it was to uninstall the display drivers for
those programs and then re-install them once the windows 10 installation
was complete.
it seemed to mainly be effecting people who were upgrading from windows 7.
but even when that was happening you could still use NVDA to do the
installation.
microsoft have since corrected the problem and i understand you can do the
upgrade with either of those screen readers running.

i also understand that this method of upgrading wont be around for long as
apparently there are a huge amount of non disabled people using this method

Have you got the new version of Windows 10 yet? If so, I would be
interested to know how people are getting on with Narrator. Mine
hasn't come into Windows Update yet, and I'm not going to look
elsewhere for it in case something screws up my machine.
