Have you configured the MS tool to give realtime protection?  From what I 
remember you need to do that in the advanced settings and I had to ask a 
normal person to configure it for me.  Since I did that I've had no threats 
or trojans or anything and also run SpyBot and AdAware everyday.  AdAware is 
set to deep scan and sometimes finds around 15 non-critical threats but 
thats rare.
