Steve - from what you said about needing sighted help initially to take
notes about the menus on the disc, implies impossibility for a totally blind
person to manage this without help, and that was what people seemed to be
saying, several of us said that viewing the movie was possible, but
accessing the disc's extras was not.
I agree with the view that some blind people seem to give up at the first
hurdle, but even this can be a judgement of the individual's abilities,
because one blind person can do something, doesn't mean that all blind
people can do the same thing - how we understand things comes from our brain
structure so what for some to quote Basil Fawlty seems to be the "bleeding
obvious" to others is impossible to grasp!

I am not disputing that, but some of the replies were so negative, that I just felt I had to chime in, especially when claims like impossible for a totally blind person to use are bandied about. I don't like that word impossible, because someone will always prove us wrong, thank goodness.

I have accessed several DVD players successfully, and I am totally blind.
The question is having a sighted person help you through the menus in the
beginning, and a good memory, or copious notes. When I buy a new DVD, I
try
to go through all the menus with a sighted person once, and write down the
menu structure. Once I do this, I can access all the extras, films, you
name it.
So to say it is impossible for totally blind people, is rather silly. You
just need a lot of patience, and a bit of help.

Yes Caroline there is a play button on the remote for a DVD player. This
will usually allow you to access the main film. The problem is that
without
seeing the menus it may be difficult to find out when the main film starts
and, it could be almost impossible to access any of the extra features on
the disc via the menus. I do not need sighted help as I have enough sight
to
be able to handle the menus if I can get close enough to the screen. But
for
a totally blind person I think this system would be difficult at best and
impossible at its worst.

appear on the screen whenever you put a DVD into the drive, and this menu
can be totally different for each disk you try to play. Is this correct?
So there isn't anything as simple as a play button on DVD remotes as

is on remotes for VCR's?
I'd be interested to know if anyone else has found a way to play DVD's independently. I know it can be done on the PC, but when using a player hooked up to the TV, it doesn't sound promising.

Hello, I have not found a dvd player that is accessable without sightted help, as for the other questions some models can store the possition of the last 10 or so dvds you have played and when you put the dvd in again it will start at the point that it finnished at when you took it out, some will only remember where you were last time you watched it if you do not take the dvd out of the machine and some will start from the beginning every time you turn on the machine. Dvds all seem to play in differant ways some will play through from beginning to end once you have started them and others will need restarting from the menu when you want to play a differant programme.
