Oh heavens, our states general assistance site demands a capta be solved. How many of us blind can solve those things. I wanted to gain access to my son's account when he lived in my city, to determine whether he actually signed up, and was getting food assistance. I couldn't get further than the capta. Imagine if I wanted food or utility assistance myself? I would have to trek to an agency. Or have someone fill out a paper application for me. As was done prior to the advent of computers. I say, most of this ADA compliance is politically oriented. If compliance actually assists us it is an accident. Remember the other year the American Council for the Blind filed a law suit against the U.S. treasury that we should have accessible currency. Well what the government has done is to give us a free smart phone currency identification application. Which does nothing to change the actual currency. Which meant we wasted our money on the suit. Because the currency identification program which costs isn't that expensive. Secondly, those who haven't smart phones either have to purchase a stand alone currency identifier, or have to identify our currency as we did prior to the creation of the stand alone identifiers. But, all the suit mandates is that currency identification be made available for us. Which is what these smart phone free applications do. ----- Original Message ----- From: "Jonathan H" <digitaltoast@xxxxxxxxx>

Looks like it made it into the news today! http://www.theregister.co.uk/2013/04/30/universal_credit_dwp_browser_compatibility_snafu/ "Benefits claimants signing up for disability living allowance online are told they cannot use modern browsers, smartphones or even Macs. The microsite will not work with Apple Macs nor other Unix-based systems (such as Linux), according to the DWP itself. Neither is the site compatible with smartphones - or any Internet Explorer installation more modern than version 6, released back in the heady days of 2001. Blind claimants attempting to submit a claim for disability living allowance are told they may "wish to claim in another way". The compatibility warning on the site states that it may not work with the JAWS or Supernova screen readers, both of which were developed for blind computer users." On 30 April 2013 16:38, Michael A. Would be interesting to see how this plays out. IE6 indeed. Good grief! On 30 April 2013 14:13, Jonathan H <digitaltoast@xxxxxxxxx> wrote:This isn't for me, it was on behalf of someone else. This is the government's current DLA claimsite. Here is the requirements page: http://www.dwp.gov.uk/eservice/need.asp#Begin quote: "If you use Jaws or Supernova screen readers, we apologise for any problems you may experience. The service does not work properly with Macs or other Unix-based systemseven though you may be able to input information. You are likely to have problems if you use Internet Explorer 7, 8, 9 and10, Windows Vista. The latest supported operating system is Windows XP. This service doesn't work with some modern browsers and operating systems". End quote. Now let's check the law: http://www.rnib.org.uk/professionals/webaccessibility/lawsandstandards/Pages /uk_law.aspx "If someone with a disability, such as sight loss, can't access the information on your website then it could be seen as discrimination. The Equality Act came into force in October 2010, replacing the Disability Discrimination Act (DDA) in England, Scotland and Wales". It's one thing to have a shoddy blog website, but for a multi-million poundgovernment disability website to violate the law quite so spectacularlyand exclude screen readers is way beyond acceptable. When I phoned, they tried to claim that it can also be done by downloading a PDF, printing it out and filling it in.That's not an acceptable excuse - if you have a website, it needs to beacceptable. Complaints should be directed to eservicehelpdesk@xxxxxxxxxxxxxxI gave up waiting on hold to RNIB helpline to ask what to do about this, still waiting for callback since 11am. If anyone knows what can be done about this, then please let me know. ** To leave the list, click on the immediately-following link:- ** [mailto:access-uk-request@xxxxxxxxxxxxx?subject=unsubscribe] ** If this link doesn't work then send a message to: ** access-uk-request@xxxxxxxxxxxxx ** and in the Subject line type ** unsubscribe ** For other list commands such as vacation mode, click on the ** immediately-following link:- ** [mailto:access-uk-request@xxxxxxxxxxxxx?subject=faq] ** or send a message, to ** access-uk-request@xxxxxxxxxxxxx with the Subject:- faq ** To leave the list, click on the immediately-following link:- ** [mailto:access-uk-request@xxxxxxxxxxxxx?subject=unsubscribe] ** If this link doesn't work then send a message to: ** access-uk-request@xxxxxxxxxxxxx ** and in the Subject line type ** unsubscribe ** For other list commands such as vacation mode, click on the ** immediately-following link:- ** [mailto:access-uk-request@xxxxxxxxxxxxx?subject=faq] ** or send a message, to ** access-uk-request@xxxxxxxxxxxxx with the Subject:- faq** To leave the list, click on the immediately-following link:- ** [mailto:access-uk-request@xxxxxxxxxxxxx?subject=unsubscribe] ** If this link doesn't work then send a message to: ** access-uk-request@xxxxxxxxxxxxx ** and in the Subject line type ** unsubscribe ** For other list commands such as vacation mode, click on the ** immediately-following link:- ** [mailto:access-uk-request@xxxxxxxxxxxxx?subject=faq] ** or send a message, to ** access-uk-request@xxxxxxxxxxxxx with the Subject:- faq-- Michael A.
