Lack of productivity features! Like what? -------------------------------------------------- From: "Ibrahim Gucukoglu" <ibrahim_gucukoglu@xxxxxxxx> Sent: Wednesday, December 30, 2009 7:46 PM To: <access-uk@xxxxxxxxxxxxx> Subject: [access-uk] Re: Ipod Touch! and Macs
Hi Hussein.Don't get me wrong here, I wasn't suggesting that using your voice is any bad thing, its great, convenient and for doing little things like writing the odd text, jotting down a note or two or just dialing a contact it can be very helpful and I'll miss Vlingo for this reason, but my main concern is using my voice as a soul input method especially if your not going to familiarize yourself with the onscreen keyboard or find it difficult. The lack of productivity features in the IFone is glaring when you look through the glitz and glammer of the interface, the shortcomings apparent. All the best, Ibrahim.----- Original Message ----- From: "Hussein Patwa" <access-uk@xxxxxxxxxxxxxx>To: <access-uk@xxxxxxxxxxxxx> Sent: Wednesday, December 30, 2009 7:41 PM Subject: [access-uk] Re: Ipod Touch! and MacsI have to agree with Ibrahim re the security downside of using your voice asthe main input method. I've been bitten by that one before. OK so youcould pedantically argue that one should know better and who would dictatepersonal correspondence in a public place, but often convenience overules rationality. _______________________________________ Have a pleasant day, Kind Regards and Best Wishes, Hussein. OK, so your happy to dictate personal or confidential text messages andemails are you? I used to use Vlingo on my Nokia phone, but apart from the fact that it isn't compatible with my new handset the N86, I'm beginning to wonder whether voice dictation is always the best way to input information. At least with the Nokia phones, you have a variety of ways of inputtingtexts, you have the number pad, an external keyboard, a Braille display if you use one and of course your voice. With the IFone, because the Bluetoothimplementation is so bad, a keyboard can't be used so the only options are the on screen keyboard and your voice. Since I'd never want to rely totallyon my voice especially if I wanted to write something highly personal to someone, its not a viable option for me. All the best, Ibrahim.----- Original Message ----- From: "Peter Holdstock" <peterholdstock@xxxxxxx>To: <access-uk@xxxxxxxxxxxxx> Sent: Wednesday, December 30, 2009 7:19 PM Subject: [access-uk] Re: Ipod Touch! and MacsI'd disagree and say it's a very good interface for the blind. The onlydownfall is the typing but now that apps such as dragon dictate are aroundthat problem is solved. I can work much quicker using the iphone/ipod gestures then I ever could with Talks, having to try and move around a screen and navigate menus. I am totally blind and I use the iPod touch. It is not an efficientinterface for the blind, but totally usable, and pretty well accessible. But Apple have designed voiceover so that it can be used by totals. It's a good music player, but I wouldn't want an iPhone for example, as for productivity it really sucks big time in my view. You're the first VI person I've come across usingtheTouch and I'd be fascinated at just how much of the functionality of the device you are able to use whilst remaining with the stock firmware. Ifyoudon't mind my prying, but you must have some residual sight to handle thetouch interface? Would you say this is worth considering for others needingto look for a new media player (for example, if my iPod Video ever kicksthe bucket) or would it be too difficult to handle? Now for your questions. For video conversion I use AVS Video Converter.Itis a paid for solution but offers a wide range of presets you can choose from, including for iPods. It's also accessible with my Supernova screen reader, or easy to see if you are using magnification. No doubt someone will offer a free solution as I'm sure I've heard of one myself, but thename escapes me right now. Yes, the new32 GB Ipod Touch. I've listened to a couple of podcasts re this and have gotto grips pretty well with it's function and how to get around it. I havea couple of questions however. I know there is a more specialised list which T and T run but wondered if there were many on the list? Also, does anyone have the sub details? Now for my questions: 1 What is the easiest way to get .avi files onto the ipod? I believe theyneed to be converted first, how do people find the accessibility of theseconversion tools? Also, where can I get the most accessible one from? When I go into the music section of the front screen, is there a way toeasily switch between artis, album and song views? How easy is it to setup play lists? Anyone got any suggestions for really cool aps which are free? Also though, any paid ones which, again, are accessible? I am pretty knocked out at how easy the touch screen is to manipulate. As an additional question, how accessible are apple mac computers in general?presumably, there is more facilities in the full blown voice over ap? I hear it is akin to window eyes? So, does that mean you can get the listof links etc in safari? Are there any more tutorials etc for the touch? And my final question, How similar is it to the I-phone? Best wishes.
