Yes George I know what you mean. I was having the very same conversation with young Ian last night. He says they aren't really smiley or sad faces as such, but rather the way the punctuation is grouped to resemble the emotions. I just think it's useful to have them, and even better that the TALKS software has been written to recognise them. Tricky to explain other than it's a bit like looking at the raw HTML code on a web page, compared to seeing that web page in Explorer. Someone was asking me how to insert them recently and I knew you could, but didn't know how to. I've worked out the smiley and sad faces, but my son interestingly told me that on my phone, which is the N91, TALKS says smiley face, but the screen shows the symbols I used to make it up. He said that on his Ericsson that he used to have, the faces actually appeared for real like they do on MSN. It's just as quick for me to write out smiley face in a text than insert the symbols, but I wanted to know how to do it. Thanks. They are included on the insert character list that you are using, but only on some phones, for instance, my old 7610i, but not on others, so you may be unlucky. Be warned though, they actually take up quite a surprising number of the characters that you are allowed per message - take a look at the number of characters remaining before and after you add an emoticon to a message, I was very surprised. I can't remember how many it is, as it's a while since I used them... Unless there's a third party application, the only way to insert emoticons is to use the select symbols list. To be honest, I don't use them personally, and I ask my friends not to, as it's too much hassle as you can see. Does that mean you have to press the star to access the menu for each one because how else could you do it? Is there a list of these emotions to your knowledge? Thanks, I'll have a play and see what happens. Jackie ----- Original Message ----- From: Chris Hallsworth To: access-uk@xxxxxxxxxxxxx Sent: Wednesday, October 17, 2007 2:59 PM Subject: [access-uk] Re: How to insert emotions on a Nokia mobile using TALKS Jackie, you have to know the ascii character combination in order to produce an emoticon. For example, a smiley would be typed as a colon, followed by a dash, followed by a closing parenthesis. Hope that helps. I've been asked how to do this and I'm buggered if I can find anything on mine that does it. Do you need predictive text on to get it because I don't use that. By pressing the star key, it brings up a whole list of symbols you can insert into text like hyphens and other punctuation, but not smiley faces, sad faces and winks etc. TALKS does recognise them when they appear in text messages I receive, but I can't reproduce them myself, and a friend has asked me how to do it too. Thanks for any suggestions. Jackie ---------------------------------------------------------------------- No virus found in this incoming message. Checked by AVG Free Edition.
