Peter,

Thanks, but this is not the problem. I find the drives in exactly the same
way as yourself in explorer.

Rather the Second Copy application I use to back up my files from the laptop
to the drives uses the drive letter assigned to the drive in its profile.
Therefore if I now try to copy the fifty gigs of information on one of the
hard drives to the other one, it is now trying to copy it to a 1 gig pen
drive.

If I cannot force the drive letters back wo the way they were I am going to
have to re jig the Second Copy profiles every time I want to use it. This
is impractical as some of the backups are done by the scheduler
automatically.

Cheers,

Hi Mark,
If its any help, I have re-named my removable drives, so that in locating
them I do not have to rely on a drive letter. After opeing Windows Explorer
my search can be as easy as hitting the letter F for - Fred. Or - George in
which case you would type G. I disregard the actual drive letter as my
first letter search does the job. I have 4 such drives and this works well.

How do you change the drive letter assignment of a removable drive, please?

I have a pair of WD Passport external hard drives on my Toshiba laptop which
have had their drive letters of E and F and these have been remembered by
the machine when they have been disconnected.

Today I plugged in a USB pen drive and it took the drive letter E forcing
the first of the hard drives to use G when it was plugged back in.

Previously it did not change the drive letter assignment when plugged in and
removed in this manner and now my backup utility is messed up as the drives
set in it are no longer correct.

How do I force the hard drive assignment back to E so it picks up the pen
drive on G again please?

Regards,
