Hi mark

I have been following this thread, I also use hal and I can
confirm that hal does work with this function in xp home. I
occasionally have the same problem as you with my zip drive,
pen drives, and external dvd writer.

Incidentally, is there any way of putting my main hard drive
back to c drive, when I installed xp my zip drive was
plugged in and xp put itself on drive e which doesn't cause
many problems but it should be on drive c. Can I change this
so that c is my hard drive?

Mark,

I think the Microsoft article George quoted assumes you've
got the
default Windows XP interface. If you have the Classic one,
the first few
steps are slightly different. Go to Start, Settings, Control
panel to
open the Control Panel window.

Arrow to Administrative tools and press Enter to open the
Administrative
tools window.

DownArrow to Computer management and press Enter to open the
Computer
management window.

Focus is in a tree view. DownArrow to Storage and make sure
JAWS says
it's open. If it isn't, press RightArrow to open it. If it's
already
open, just keep DownArrowing and you should find Disk
management. If it
isn't there, you must have a different setup to me. I have
Windows XP
Pro SP2 - how about you?

Once focus arrives on the disk management item, this should
update
another area of the window. You can Tab around the screen to
this area,
but it doesn't work well with the PC cursor so I'd suggest
using the
JAWS cursor.

Maximise the window with Alt + SpaceBar, X

Open the View menu and go into the Bottom submenu. If
Graphical view
isn't checked, press Enter on it to check it and close the
menu system.
If it is already checked, press Alt to exit the menu system
without
altering anything.

Press Insert + NumPad minus to route the JAWS cursor to the
PC cursor.

Press PageDown to get to the bottom of the screen, and
UpArrow through
the information. You're looking for a line that starts with
the word
Removable. When you get to it, press Insert + RightArrow to
get the
mouse pointer onto it.

Press NumPad star to do a right mouse click on the drive and
you should
get a context menu whose first item is "Change Drive Letter
and
Paths...". Press Enter on it and a dialogue will open

Tab to the Change button and press it. A further dialogue
opens. Tab to
the combo box and choose a letter.

OK out of the dialogue, confirming your choice as you do so,
and use Alt
+ F4 to close the Computer management, Administrative tools
and Control
Panel windows.

Have a cup of tea and a relax.

Steve

George,

Thanks, but my machine does not seem to hav ethe performance
and
maintenance
option. In computer management I do not have the disk
management option
either.

I'll have another look later when the brain is a little
refreshed!

Peter,

Thanks, but this is not the problem. I find the drives in
exactly the same
way as yourself in explorer.

Rather the Second Copy application I use to back up my files
from the laptop
to the drives uses the drive letter assigned to the drive in
its profile.
Therefore if I now try to copy the fifty gigs of information
on one of the
hard drives to the other one, it is now trying to copy it to
a 1 gig pen
drive.

If I cannot force the drive letters back wo the way they
were I am going to
have to re jig the Second Copy profiles every time I want to
use it. This
is impractical as some of the backups are done by the
scheduler
automatically.

Cheers,

Hi Mark,
If its any help, I have re-named my removable drives, so
that in locating
them I do not have to rely on a drive letter. After opeing
Windows Explorer
my search can be as easy as hitting the letter F for - Fred.
Or - George in
which case you would type G. I disregard the actual drive
letter as my
first letter search does the job. I have 4 such drives and
this works well.

How do you change the drive letter assignment of a removable
drive, please?

I have a pair of WD Passport external hard drives on my
Toshiba laptop which
have had their drive letters of E and F and these have been
remembered by
the machine when they have been disconnected.

Today I plugged in a USB pen drive and it took the drive
letter E forcing
the first of the hard drives to use G when it was plugged
back in.

Previously it did not change the drive letter assignment
when plugged in and
removed in this manner and now my backup utility is messed
up as the drives
set in it are no longer correct.

How do I force the hard drive assignment back to E so it
picks up the pen
drive on G again please?
