Peter,
Try right clicking on the desktop, and select "Sort by name". This
will at least put the icons in alphabetical order.

Using Windows 7 and JAWS 12
Hello
The items on the desktop are not reading properly i.e. I cannot arrow
through items in the normal way and first letter navigation does not
work. I suspect that the view is set to icons rather than list but I
can't work out how to change this. Can somebody advise please.
