Hi Ray,

But the Victor Classic Plus is pretty portable and has a speaker.

Steve, I know all this, but the original enquiry was focused on DAISY
players, not recorders, and I think Caroline is precise enough to know what
she's enquiring about.

Yes, there is the Professor, an ugly beast of a thing, that plays other
formats too as well as DAISY. I think something relatively portable was
being sort with a speaker, so the Vibe and Scholar wouldn't enter the
picture.

Hi Ray,

How can the PTN1 be the only player with a speaker? The PTR2 has one, the
Victor Readers all have one, except the Vibe and the Wave, there are quite a
few with speakers.

The PTN1 will remember the positions of several disks, I believe it is the
same as the PTR1. If so, it is the position of 10,000 disks, provided you
have no bookmarks other than the theoretical 10,000 disk limit.

Oh yes, I forgot, the Telex Professor not only has one speaker but two, it
is stereo <Smile>.

Caroline, although I have no direct experience of the PTN1 I am sure that
it, like the Classic before it, can speed up MP3 discs. I bought an
unabridged novel on an ordinary MP3 CD a while back and the Classic was able
to speed it up very nicely without any undue side-effects.

I'l be interested to see if the PTN1 can recall positions on more than one
disc, but I think I'm right in saying that this resume feature applies to
DAISY books. Please someone, put me right on this if I'm wrong.

I saw a PTN1 at Sight Village and I'd say they've slimmed it down a bit
compared with the older Classic. Don't think it has any rotary controls
which means that volume, and tone - if it has control one will be controled
by firmware.

AS far as I know, the PTN1 is the only DAISY player with a speaker.

Hope that is of a little help, and hope someone comes back with a bit more
info.

Subject: [access-uk] Daisy Players

Hello,

I am looking into getting a Daisy player which will play Daisy titles as
well as MP3 CD's and possibly audio CD's too.

After some research, it seems as if the PTN1 player, available from the
RNIB, meets most of my requirements - it has an in-built speaker, works from
battery as well as mains and allows you to speed up the playback of disks -
but there are a couple of questions which as yet I haven't managed to find
an answer to. So if anyone has one of these players, please could you let
me know the following:

1. If you insert an MP3 disk into this player, such as those now provided
by the Calibre library or the Infotech magazine, can you increase the speed
of the playback? When I listen to material on cassette, I've got used to
increasing the speed considerably and would want to do the same with MP3's.
I know you can increase the playback speed for Daisy disks, but don't know
if this applies to MP3 disks as well.

2. I know there is a resume feature so that if you stop a disk and remove
it from the player, the next time you put that disk back into the player, it
will remember where you were and start playing from that point. How many
disks does this apply to? If I have three disks which I want to listen to,
will the player remember my last position on all three, or does it only
remember the last position on one disk?

And finally, if anyone has any general comments about this player, either
positive or negative, or if you think there is a far better player available
which I probably should consider instead, please let me know.

Thanks,

Caroline.
