Mmmm So, on top of purchasing the Amazon Echo there are additional costs.
I think that if I lived alone I'd be very tempted.
I might wait a while and see how this device develops and see if the cost
comes down before putting my hand in my pocket. But the potential for such a
device is mind-blowing and should hopefully make many things much more
accessible.

an update on what i wrote yesterday.
i've received an email from british gas with some offers for existing
and new Hive users.
you can now buy the Hive hub without needing to have the central heating
thermostat installed, and if you buy 3 accessories they will sell the
hub to you for half price.
the least expensive of their light bulbs are their active dimable bulbs
that cost £19 for individual bulbs.
but they do sell a 3 pack and a 5 pack £49 for a pack of 3 saving £8
and the pack of 5 costs £79 a saving of £16 and presumably these packs
would count as buying at least 3 accessories which means they would sell
the hub to you for £40.
so you could get a 3 bulb system with the hub for £89 and 5 bulbs with
the hub for £119.
the other smart devices they sell are:
door and window sensor £29
motion sensor £29
smart plug adapter £39
and perhaps one of the best deals is that if you already have the Hive
hub with some of their accessories you can upgrade your central heating
to a wireless thermostat that you can then control from your smart phone
or by voice with the amazon echo for £99.
a couple of years ago this cost£200.

You don’t need sighted assistance to set up the echo, however you do
need to be familiar with iOS or Android operating systems or have
someone willing to set up the Echo for you if you are not. The Alexa
app is definitely usable and the instructions provided by both app and
speaker are clear and easy to follow.

Yes, most of the skills are free, however some require you to have
functionality from websites in order to work. For instance, if you want
to use JustEat to order your favourite takeaway, you obviously have to
have a JustEat account and to have placed an order before to enable this
functionality. There are other skills which enable you to order cabs,
check airfare prices and flight status etc. etc. as well as the fun and
novelty ones as previously mentioned.
