Hi Diane,
that is normal procedure for warrantee work.

You may be able to make a deal with the computer manufacturer to get it
back, but it may have already been disposed of.

Mike ~ It is a good day if I learned something new.

I had a 10Gig hard drive, GENERIC IDE DISK TYPE47, still under warranty that
suddenly died three weeks ago. I was not having any problems at all, the PC
purring like a kitten, and it just went.

To make a long story short, I took it in to the shop where I bought my PC
and it took them a week to look at my computer and another week to put in a
new 30Gig drive. (Anxiety plus!) This cost me $240 including labour and I
am to receive a refund for the cost of the drive when the manufacturer
confirms the warranty.

I am now told that the manufacturer has confirmed the warranty. I expected
to receive my old damaged drive back so that I could pay someone to retrieve
some of the data from it. (The shop where I took it barely retrieved
anything and I'm sure they didn't try very hard.)

Now they tell me that I don't get my old damaged drive back. I can't
believe that the manufacturer would keep damaged drives. Do I not have the
right to have my data back? Can anyone tell me what they have experienced?

I have to deal with the shop in the morning so hope to hear from someone.
Thanks a lot.

Diane
