With the pending UK referendum on whether or not to remain in the EU, it might
be advisable for those members who will be buying items from the UK (or UK
members who might be buying items from the EU) to consider whether it might be
worth purchasing the items in the near future if they are going to cost more
than about £30.
If the referendum votes against remaining in the EU, then there will be a
period before the UK starts any sort of action to leave (which apparently can
be a 2 year process). However, it seems unlikely that any mutual trade
agreement would be agreed within that time, and it is unclear at what point the
EU would start imposing VAT and customs duties on items purchased from the UK
(and vice versa) as no-one has ever left the EU to date.
Certainly I am concerned from a trader's point of view that this will impact my
sales to the EU (which accounts for around 55% of my sales).......
On a side note, I also feel sorry for the Irish government, who will have to
deal with the #VATMESS whereby any e-services provided over the internet have
to be charged at a VAT rate dependent on the location of the customer and paid
to that country. At the moment, HMRC do a sterling job for plenty of
businesses around the world who want to deal with an English speaking tax
office, but if we were outside of the EU, then the only other option would be
Eire, who are of course much smaller.
