My brief prayer: One definition of insanity is doing the same thing in the same way and expecting different results. Once again an economically weakened Israel faces enormous pressure to make the first concessions, on the latest attempted road to Middle East peace, from a United States presidency aiming toward re-election . Dear G-d, please let the differences - in the names of the negotiators, in the decisions those negotiators make and implement, in the consequences of the recent war in Iraq, in the worldwide war on terror - be significant enough to nurture and build our deepest, constant hope for peace throughout the Middle East. Amen. Optonol's Ex-Press shunt is an effective, long-term alternative to traditional glaucoma surgery and can significantly improve the quality of life of glaucoma patients by providing possible relief from life-long dependency on drug therapy. The FDA-approved shunt is a miniature glaucoma drainage device, just the tiny spike at the end of the needle. A simple, short procedure inserts the shunt at the edge of the colored part of the eye, the limbus. The microscopic conduit drains excess fluid out of the eye and into the tissues surrounding the eye, where it can`t do any harm. The pressure reduction brings down the pain level and reduces the patient's need for medications to relieve that pain. ?.The best candidate for the Ex-Press shunt is someone who has already failed other glaucoma treatments. ?. The device was developed by Optonol at their Neve Ilan offices outside of Jerusalem, and last year American optical giant Ciba Vision acquired the rights to market it in the United States and Canada. Since its introduction on the American market last year, there have been hundreds of cases implanted, and almost 800 doctors are now certified to use the device, according to Andrea Argenbright of Ciba. From www.jcpa.org/daily for 7/9/03: Rutgers Puts Anti-Semitism on the Schedule - Andrea Peyser A student group at Rutgers University has snagged the third annual National Student Conference of the Palestine Solidarity Movement, to be held Oct. 10-12 ?. The conference features tips for destroying the Jewish state and speeches from notable anti-Semites. Organizer Charlotte Kates, 23, a Rutgers law student, said that she, as well as the sponsoring organization, the New Jersey Solidarity Movement - an offshoot of International Solidarity - supports Palestinian homicide bombers. "Palestinian resistance in all its forms has been a very powerful tool of justice," said Kates. "I do not believe apartheid, colonial settler states have a right to exist." As a state school, Rutgers bestows public funding to Solidarity, said a spokeswoman. (New York Post) From www.jcpa.org/daily for 7/8/03:· Iran's Millionaire Mullahs - Paul Klebnikov The 1979 revolution expropriated the assets of foreign investors and the nation's wealthiest families, which were then given to Islamic charitable foundations that now serve as slush funds for the mullahs and their supporters. The man most adept at manipulating this hidden power structure is Ayatollah Rafsanjani, who has more or less run the Islamic Republic for the past 24 years. The 1979 revolution transformed the Rafsanjani clan into commercial pashas. One brother headed the country's largest copper mine; another took control of the state-owned TV network; a brother-in-law became governor of Kerman province, while a cousin runs an outfit that dominates Iran's $400 million pistachio export business; a nephew and one of Rafsanjani's sons took key positions in the Ministry of Oil; another son heads the Tehran Metro construction project. Today, the family is also believed to control one of Iran's biggest oil engineering companies, a plant assembling Daewoo automobiles, and Iran's best private airline. The Palestinians called for an end to remarks such as those of Transportation Minister Avigdor Lieberman, who suggested that released Palestinian prisoners "should be drowned." Instead of its usual fare displaying praises of suicide bombers and encouraging Palestinian children to become shahidim (martyrs), the official PA television channel broadcast on Monday quieter songs and declarations of support for Palestinian Authority Chairman Yasser Arafat. According to Haaretz, the Palestinian Ministry of Information last week sent a letter to Palestinian radio and television stations encouraging them to "create an appropriate atmosphere for returning to the track of political negotiations." The letter said Israel should not be provided with excuses to avoid withdrawing from Palestinian lands, the paper said. Palestinian Minister of Information Nabil Amr said yesterday that there is currently no incitement in the official Palestinian media. ?. Sad that this needs to be written ? from Scott Mathias, www.honestreporting.com: Allaying Fears of Students/Parents re: Going to Israel Mr. Richard Horowitz shared with me his approach to speaking with students/parents of students who are concerning about the safety of going to our programs in Israel. He suggested that I type this up and make it available to everyone who deals with this issue. This information can make or break a trip decision for a prospective student. The major issue is misinformation. People have a perception, due to the media, that Israel is extremely dangerous and that chances of getting killed/wounded there are much greater than elsewhere. What are the facts: 1) Israel is probably safer than most cities we are living in. Check out the statistics for your city and have them on hand. Los Angeles, with a population of 3.6 million has averaged about 750 murders annually, which means 21 per 100,000. Israel, in the last 33 months has had 930 murders, 810 from terror (population 5 million), which means 7 in 100,000. 2) If you are not in the West Bank or Gaza strip you are in a statistically safe zone. 96% of the violent incidents have taken place in the West Bank and Gaza strip where 5% of the population lives (250,000). 4% of the violence has been on the ?homefront? where 95% of the population lives (4,750,000). 3) Even in the Israel where 95% of the population live, if you stay out of buses and restaurants you avoid virtually all other sources of deaths and injuries. 4) Two to four times as many Israelis die each year in car accidents than in acts of violence but no one refuses to go to Israel for fear of being in a car accident. 5) If you do not include people injured/killed on buses or in restaurants, there were 160 people murdered in Israel proper over the last 33 months. A person stands a much greater chance of being murdered or injured in virtually any section of any city in North America. 6) The news creates a perception of a lot more violence than there actually is. A few deaths in Israel is front page news all over the world. Few people know about the million people killed in the Sudan over the last 10-12 years of civil war there or the 400,000-500,000 sold into slavery. While every death is tragic, deaths in Israel always make headlines.
