Dear all, Dan Katz-Stein tells me that the listserv doesn't accept attachments as a virus protection. So, I am copying the newsletter as part of this email Toni Yellow Springs Havurah Newsletter July/August 2004 Taummuz-Av-Elul 5764 =FF Shabbat Services (CORRECTED) Here are the correct Saturday dates for Shabbat Services at Rockford, starting at 10 am and who will be leading (so far). Date Leader August 7 August 21 Toni Dosik (Jesse Rothman=B9s bar mitzvah in Israel) September 4 September 18 Suzanne Smailes (see below) September 25 Yom Kippur (see below) October 2 Sukkot (see below) October 16 November 20 December 4 December 18 Larry Turyn led a wonderful service on Saturday, July 17. Included in the group that morning were visitors from the Feminyan, whose members include Randi Rothman and Helen Klein from Yellow Springs. v Update on the Torah The Steering Committee has been working on issues related to the Torah. Here is where we are now: The Torah we received as a gift from United Theological Seminary is back in Yellow Springs and is residing, for now, in the Ark that was built by Paul Shreibman and Elliot Gaines which is at Jay and Randi=B9s house. We have been having serious discussions with a number of people to help us identify a usable Torah that might be available to us. Although final arrangements have not been made, the Steering Committee feels very confiden= t that we will be successful in bringing a usable Torah to Yellow Springs soon. It has been amazing and gratifying to see the support we have received from members of the Havurah and from others in the Yellow Springs community. On a personal note, I was struck by the fact that we have received gifts fo= r purchase of the Torah from such a wide variety of people and organizations in Yellow Springs. I think it speaks to the fact that we have more in common with one another than things that separate us. Recently, for instance, we received a donation from the Unitarian Universalist Fellowship of Yellow Springs and we have also received gifts toward the purchase of a Torah from Al and Donna Denman, Russ and Mary Morgan, Larry Turyn, and an anonymous donor. So far, in fact, we have raised over $8,000 in gifts and pledges. v Education On June 14, a group of parents and others met together to talk about Educational needs in the community and goals and possibilities in and aroun= d Yellow Springs. Those that attended were: Cheryl Levine, Stephen Green, Steve Broidy, Gary Zaremsky. Some were not able to attend, but emailed their thinking. These included David and Daniele Seitz and Miri Nasoff. From that meeting a number of priorities were identified. They are as follows (the preceding number indicates the number of votes each received) (7) Experiential Learning (6) Professional (experienced) teachers (4) Learning Hebrew (3) Linking Havurah with education of youth (adults and kids learning together) (2) Sense of community (2) Teachers who can inspire (1) Learning Jewish history v Affiliated with a temple v Non-denominational Discussions and planning is still underway, but a number of options seem to be possible and likely, including =FF Teaching Hebrew in Yellow Springs in a mixed setting, based on level of skill not age (kids and adults together). Randi Rothaman is looking for a teacher who could do that, possibly a teacher from the Hillel Academy in Dayton, who would like to do some "extra" teaching. =FF Providing limited educational programming during services for children under 8-10. This would be done by Miri Nasoff and would be related to the cycle and would be both fun and educational. Children would spend part of the time on their own and join the rest of us for the Torah portion of the Services and then return to their own space to continue study of the Torah on their own. The general conclusions by the Steering Committee are that we will continue to work on parallel steps: develop a Havurah (local) program and at the sam= e time, see what evolves at Temple Sholom. Included in that is an underlying commitment by the Havurah to understandin= g and assisting with the needs of children who could be preparing for Bar and Bat Mitzvahs. =20 v Liturgy Committee and High Holiday Schedule. The Liturgy Committee (Toni Dosik, Len Kramer, Cheryl Levine, Randi Rothman, Suzanne Smailes) met on Sunday July 17. The focus of the meeting was on: =FF Determine a reasonable plan for High Holiday Services =FF Selecting a prayer book for regular use at Saturday Services =FF Establishing "norms" for services so that a certain level of predictability is maintained. =FF Coordinating with guest rabbis and others leading services about these established norms =FF Inform and invite participation of the Havurah in the selection of a prayerbook and establishment of norms Here is what we have determined, so far: High Holiday and Holiday Schedule Thursday September 16, First Day Rosh Hashanah 10am Morning services at Rockford led by Cheryl Levine and Randi Rothman, incorporating some of the Peace Service. Bring your own drink (either alcoholic or not) and snacks Prayerbook(s) For the High Holidays, we will continue to use the prayer book edited by Eric Friedland, Machzor Ruach Chadashah. We will make copies of the transliterations found in the back, so that it will be easier to use. After the High Holidays, we are going to look at a number of different prayer books, the Canadian Reconstructionist siddur, the American Reconstructionist siddur, and the Prager Renewal siddur (which we have used once already). In the spring, there will be a new reform prayer book that we will also look at. The idea is to purchase one copy of each, and use parts of it for Saturday morning services in order to give us all a chance to see what we like. The feeling is that we probably won=B9t find the "perfect" siddur, but we are looking for one that meets our needs best and then add things from others, if necessary. We are mindful of the importance of continuity, of recognizing that not all of us read Hebrew and that the transliterations should be seen as a step toward more Hebrew literacy, not a distraction and that the prayer book has to reflect our values of inclusivity. We hope that by using different ones for the next few months, we will all agree on the one that suits us best. v Saturday Afternoon Study Group. The Saturday afternoon Study group continues to meet. We will be starting a new topic, probably after the High Holidays. Stay tuned. v Antioch Students. We have been in contact with a group of Jewish students at Antioch and have invited them to join us for Saturday Services and for the High Holidays. v Communication. If you want to communicate with me, Toni Dosik, my email is tdosik@xxxxxxxxxxxxxx If you want to communicate with the Havurah as a whole, you can do so by sending me an item for inclusion in the next newsletter (probably coming out just before the High Holidays) and/or sending a message to the group via the lisserv: yshavurah@xxxxxxxxxxxxxx I= f you are not on the listserve and would like to be, simply send a message to that address and write, "subscribe" in the subject heading (no quote marks, however.) =20 =20 P.
