Cheryl,
Following is what I responded to our friend in Philadelphia who wrote us the
same information that you sent out. For several days, Bill and I hashed
this thing out. I was REALLY getting upset because I feel so strongly that
Bush is a terrible threat to America and world peace, but what to do if the
Dems put out someone so anti-Israel?

After my e-mail to him, my friend wrote all the folks he originally posted to
and told us that he had no verification that it was true and that it might,
indeed, be a hoax.

I was deeply disturbed by your e-mail about Dean and Israel. Bill and I
talked a lot about how we can possibly vote for Bush, whom we feel is a
major threat to this country and to the world.

So, I thought I would do a little research. This evening, I turned on
C-Span and heard the current Democratic candidates who spoke in Orlando
recently.

Dean was specifically asked about the Israel/Palestinian conflict and what
he would do about it. He was, as is his habit, very direct and did not beat
around the bush (Bush?). He specifically said that there needs to be a
Palestinian state and that the majority of Israelis know that if they do not
allow a Palestinian state, they cannot have a Jewish democracy in Israel
because of the population growth of the Palestinians.

He also said that both sides are exhausted and ready to make peace and that
the US has to facilitate this. He specifically said that the Islamist
extremists must be contained. Terrorism must be contained. That Israel
cannot make peace if crazies (my word) keep bombing children in school
busses (his example). Those extremists are supported not by the
Palestinians themselves, but by Saudi and other forces. Those sources need
to be cut off. When they are, the bombings will stop.

He said that Bush's activities in Iraq have fueled the fire of the Arab
extremists rather than giving power and credence to the Islamic moderates
who can create a democratic Palestinian state.

Lastly, he said that should he become president, the first thing he would do
is send Bill Clinton, who was most successful in getting these parties to
talk, to the middle east, and tell him not to come back until it's done!

I don't know about you, but as Jewish liberals who are deeply committed to
Israel, we could not have heard better from anyone.

We were greatly relieved to hear this from Dean, and feel that, should he
gain the Democratic candidacy, unless we hear something that contradicts
this, he will have our vote.

The more I think about it, the more I'm wondering about veracity of the e-mail
you sent. I have been listening to all the candidates a lot. Although I've
heard some pro-Palestinian/anti-Israel code words from Kucinich (which deeply
disappointed us, because we liked him), I have never heard Dean speak this way.

The man just doesn't use code words. It's not his style. He is very
plain-spoken and direct.

Did you actually hear Dean say these things on Blitzer's show? Did the person
who sent you the original e-mail?

Could this be a ruse by pro-Bushies? To alienate ordinarily Democratic Jews
from their preferred party? I've heard of this happening a lot, especially
from Republicans (not that Dems are always angels. They're not).

Anyway, I'm really concerned about this, as you can see. Any information you
can give us would be very welcome.
