Subject: MDG Civil Society Hearings TF Update 1

Dear all,

On 14 - 15 June, 2010, the UN General Assembly will convene 'Informal
Interactive Hearings of the General Assembly with Non-governmental
organizations, Civil society organizations and the Private sector' as part of
the process leading up to the MDG Summit in September. The outcome of these
Hearings will be integrated into discussions at the Summit and the outcome
document.

A taskforce of 13 representatives from civil society and the private sector has
been convened by the Office of the President of the General Assembly to help
organize the Hearings. The Youth Coalition
(www.youthcoalition.org<http://www.youthcoalition.org/>) has been invited to
join this taskforce to ensure that youth perspectives are adequately integrated
into all aspects of the Hearings. The Youth Coalition is also the only SRHR
organization on the taskforce (see full list of taskforce members below).

We would like to ensure that the planning process for the Hearings is as
inclusive and transparent as possible. We plan to prepare regular email updates
and share them with interested organizations, as well as ask for inputs to
contribute to the planning process. If you or your organization is interested
to receive these updates, please send an email to
katie.chau@xxxxxxxxxxx<mailto:katie.chau@xxxxxxxxxxx>, including: (1) your
name, (2) the name of your organization and (3) your preferred email address.

One of the taskforce's responsibilities is to select the NGO speakers and
participants for the Informal Hearings. An online application will soon be
available and we will send details about the application when they are ready.
The deadline for applications will be April 16.

In the meantime I suggest that interested NGOs start to think about potential
speakers and participants for the NGO Hearings, as it will be important to have
strong representation from progressive youth and SRHR organizations. The exact
themes of the Hearings are yet to be determined, but they will relate to the
key themes in the Secretary General's Report 'Keeping the Promise'
(http://www.un.org/ga/search/view_doc.asp?symbol=A/64/665) and the themes of
the 6 roundtables at the high level summit (outlined in the annex of the SG's
report on pg 34).

The first meeting of the Hearings task force was on Monday 22 March. The main
points of discussion included: a review of the taskforce's TOR, preliminary
discussion on selection criteria for participants at the Hearings (no decisions
were made), preliminary discussions on the themes of the Hearings (no decisions
were made).

If you have any questions, feel free to email me at

Warm regards,

Katie Chau
