The problem begins when these two notions are accreted onto the idea of self as a physical organism in the world.after so much time chiding others about making assumptions about what is beyond experience, you have made two metaphenomenal assumptions in just a couple days. first you assumed that there are other consciousnesses that are beyond your own experience. now you assume that there is a physical universe independent of your experience. would you explain just how you did this without reformulating your position in any way?
Sure. Firstly, I have made no assumption that there are other consciousnesses that are beyond the immediate data of experience -- rather the picture is there by default. Secondly, the word "physical" is used here in contrast to "mental" when referring to the phenomena of immediate experience, rather than to the *metaphysical* idea that physical objects have a "real" existence beyond the data of experience. [Cayuse: 2009-11-01: 07:52]: Holding the picture that other people are accompanied by other consciousnesses is not a choice I make, but a default condition (PI 425). how is this not a reformulation?
The idea that there are other consciousnesses is an imagined picture, and imagined pictures are aspects of the immediate data of experience (i.e. not beyond it). The picture is there by default, and even if it wereincorrect I (this physical organsim) would still behave as though it were correct, so it makes no difference whether or not the picture is correct.
