A group of 14 white geese, that Quentin Yoerger found yesterday, was still at Hope Lake this morning. This is near Cambridge, in western Jefferson co. Nolan Pope and I got there around 10:30. It took along time to see there heads. Seemed like 5 were Ross's and some were Snow Geese and some I didn't get a good look at. The group took off while we were there, but came back in after 5 minutes. Quentin sure finds alot of good birds. We went to the south part of Jefferson Marsh, on Cty Y. We saw 1 shrike just east of the marsh and 2 in the marsh. I haven't seen any around Madison since the 1st. We saw a flock of 100+ finches over the tamaracks, that dropped into them. I'm sure that they were w-w crossbills, but didn't ID them. We stopped in McFarland and looked at Lower Mud Lake. The constant change of waterfowl is amazing. There were over 100 Ring-necked Ducks and around 50 Pintails. Coot numbers were up. On the far SW side there were a fair number of White-fronted Geese, with some swans and ducks. To far to count. 5 Green-winged teal were nice to see. Seems like I see more geese around 1:30 than early in the day.
