Just wanted to thank Betsy Abert for posting that article on birds and storm
survival. As a very recent transplant from Milwaukee to New Jersey, I got to
have the experience of riding out Hurricane Sandy with the power out and the
pretty-much-constant sound of trees straining, cracking, and toppling in the
woods right behind where I live. Scariest weather I've ever experienced by a
long shot!

I was amazed by how it seemed to be business as usual for the birds as soon as
the storm ended. This Carolina Wren was singing nicely on top of a
hurricane-downed tree as if nothing unusual had happened:

Anyway, if anyone is interested in my experience, just drop me a note off-list.

Interesting piece in the NY Times today about how birds fare in megastorms like
Sandy.
