This morning a Western Meadowlark was singing from the oaks and utility
wires at the southeast corner of CTH R and Elmwood Road in Dodge County.
There were at least 3 Eastern Meadowlarks farther east on Elmwood Road and a
couple more a little north of the intersection along CTH R. The 20 degree
temperatures had the Yellow-rumped Warblers feeding low near the Rock River
and I saw at least 10 in the bottomlands along Elmwood. Also along Elmwood
near Pike Road were 2 Greater Yellowlegs and 4 Lesser Yellowlegs. A good
variety of waterfowl was along this road.
In Green Lake County at Lake Maria there were 2 Forster's Terns among the
Bonaparte's Gulls swooping on the lake. I saw a few White Pelicans here, a
Double-crested Cormorant, a Horned and several Pied-billed Grebes, and 17
species of ducks.
Lake Emily had many of the same species of ducks and featured 4 Common
Loons. I saw no Red-necked Grebes at either lake.
Northeast of Lake Maria along Lake Maria Road, the pond west of CTH O
continues to be spectacular with 4 Ross's Geese, 2 blue morph Snow Geese,
about 10 Cackling Geese and at least 156 Greater White-fronted Geese seen
this afternoon.
