This was the 15th year of the Waterloo CBC. On Sunday, Dec. 14, we found 48
species (+ one other taxa) plus 3 Count Week (CW) species. Three previous years
had lower counts; one other was equal to this year’s. The total number of
individuals was 7,223. Only one other year, 2002, was lower, with 4,783. This
wasn’t bad considering the DENSE FOG we had for almost the entire day, severely
hampering seeing anything (Belted Kingfisher and Canada Geese in fog:
https://plus.google.com/photos/102295740065781614442/albums/6094718147537175617?authkey=CK3-kOjXuIKKqAE).
On the other hand, it was 40 degrees warmer than last year.

There was almost no chance of finding a Snowy Owl in the fog, but we did find 2
Red-headed Woodpeckers and 1 RUBY-CROWNED KINGLET for the first time ever on
this count! Another highlight was the record number of Great Horned Owls found:
23, an amazing 14 more than the highest count of 9 in 2007. The fog must have
suited the owls well, perhaps amplifying their calls, as one observer could
hear 8 from one location at Zeloski Marsh.

Thanks to all 22 field observers and 8 feeder counters who participated!
