Anyone who has been watching the recent weather reports knows that we are
finally in for some spring weather and several days of southerly winds.
The overnight winds will obviously be very favorable to migrating birds, so
we should see a number of species arriving over the next few days.
The Yellow-rumped Warblers have been around for at least a week, but over
the weekend their numbers increased from just a few to numerous males
giving their constant call notes from the trees overhead. At the same time
I noticed a decrease in the Tree Sparrows.
Today, I still had at least 3 Tree Sparrows at the feeders and also the
Juncos were feeding in good numbers. I would expect that as the
Ruby-crowned Kinglets and first Blue-gray Gnatcatchers arrive with the warm
front that these birds will entirely disappear from southern Wisconsin.
I find it interesting to watch not only the new birds coming in for the
year, but also the departure of these winter visitors around this time of
year.
