With snow on the ground I couldn't drag myself out of bed to go early so I birded at the arboretum from 10:30am to 1:30pm. The temp was high 30's without much wind. The sky was completely overcast. Highlights: About 20 Purple Finches were eating last year's crop of crab apples from one tree in Longenecker Garden. There was actually a seldom seen Teal on Teal Pond. It was a male, Blue-winged Teal. At Big Spring there were 4 Yellow-rumped Warblers, 2 Northern Rough-winged Swallows and 1 Barn Swallow flying back and forth over the water just north of the spring. Three Ruby-crowned Kinglets were feeding in the tamaracks near the spring. West of the Big Spreen in Wingra Woods I came across my FOY Blue-gray Gnatcatcher. I never saw one insect. I hope the birds are finding something to eat. My eBird report is appended below. Good birding to all and let's hope for warmer weather soon!!
