Conservation Enthusiasts:

The Bluebird Restoration Assoc. of WI (BRAW) announces the production of a
record number of 45,489 songbirds from 8,699 nest boxes monitored by 639
individuals for the 2009 season. A total of 404 reports were submitted from
all
but 5 WI counties.

The average monitor spends 2.5 hours/week for a period of 17 weeks. On this
basis,
BRAW nest box monitors collectively donated about 27,000 volunteer hours for
the
2009 season. This effort represents one of the largest citizen science
conservation
projects in Wisconsin.

The 45,489 songbirds fledged were made up of four species: 28,814 bluebirds,
11,054 Tree Swallows, 4,923 House Wrens and 698 chickadees. All four
species
fledged record numbers for a single season in the 23 year history of BRAW
conser-
vation. The 28,814 bluebirds fledged also represents a new NATIONAL RECORD
for bluebirds fledged from a single state in a season.

BRAW has initiated a conservation effort to fledge 30,000 bluebirds by the
2011
season. To that end, we are adding hundreds of additional nest boxes for
new and
expanded trails throughout WI, 900+ for the 2010 season alone. We are
fortunate to
be able to put these boxes in place at no cost to those that will monitor a
trail of 20+
boxes.

Several dozen persons on this WBN list are already nest box monitors. If
there are others
who are interested in developing trails in the vicintiy of their homes, feel
free to contact
me at: (715) 344-8081 or kentsue@xxxxxxxxxxx .
