Walked fir plantation in hopes of finding some winter finches. Siskins and purple finches have been seen most of the fall, and I had siskins today. Saw three larger birds land in a 12' Fraser fir and two of them had a reddish cast so I assumed purples. Then heard "djit, djit" and saw heads and bright wing bars and realized they were indeed white-winged crossbills. Got to within 20' of the trio and watched for a minute or so. They flew off and were relocated some time later in same stand of Frasers and observed for ~5 mins. from 20'. Easy pickings for them as fir cones shatter, making seed extraction unnecessary. Ample cone crop so there is sustenance if they choose to stay.
