At least 5 Snowy Owls have been reported in WI over the past two days. Recent
reports out of northern MN and MI as well.

This morning I had ~50 Common Redpolls at my house, my first of the fall.

Subject: Snowy Owl & other winter birds - Ashland

A Snowy Owl was photographed at the Northern Great Lakes Visitor Center in
Ashland today, but was gone by the time I arrived after work. I also had my
first N. Shrike of the season at my house this morning. Snow Buntings have been
frequently reported by area birders here the past 3 days or so. We're also
seeing above-average numbers of Snow Geese, with a flock of 29 reported last
night. 60 Cackling Geese have been periodically at Maslowski Beach in Ashland,
with a few Snows mixed in.

Purple Finches are moving through in large numbers. Pine Siskins are common
again. And while none have been reported locally to my knowledge, Hawk Ridge in
Duluth has tallied Bohemian Waxwings, Pine Grosbeaks, and Common Redpolls
already, which lend promise of an accurate winter finch forecast and good
winter finch year to come. We'll see...
