Tom & I spent New Year's Day checking out the mouth of the Fox River in Green Bay and areas north. The bay area itself (by the power plant) held an incredible number of Common Mergansers (5,000+), only a couple Red-br Merg's, 31 Bald Eagles, 2 Canvasbacks, 1 Double-crested Cormormant, and 1 Peregrine Falcon. We also saw 61 swans out near the ice shelf, but they were too far to conclusively i.d. At Bay Beach Sanctuary we found gobs of Black Ducks, 1 male Redhead, and 3 Hooded Mergansers. Drove north to the Barkhausen Waterfowl Preserve and found a single RUSTY BLACKBIRD by a small area of open water near the visitor center (feeding among 21 Mourning Doves and some Canada Geese). Last stop was Sensiba Wildlife Area where we drove to the end of the road and checked out the open water on the bay. We were surprised the see a male AMERICAN WIGEON! Also present were 11 TRUMPETER SWANS (group of 7 and 4 included immature birds) and 10 BLACK DUCKS. Nifty way to begin the year!
