This afternoon, below the dam in Hustisford, a Red Knot was present along with 8 more common shorebird species (Wilson's Phalarope was not present today). The Red Knot is still in mostly breeding plumage; the red is still on the breast and face, but nearly absent on the belly. There are a few plain gray scapulars that will be part of the bird's winter plumage. I was glad that Dave Schrab showed up because it was a life bird for him and he was the person who told us about this place. To reach this location from STH60, turn north on Rubicon St. (there is a gas station on the northeast corner just west of the river), then take a right onto Mill Street and drive to its end and turn right on Griffith St. Go to the end of Griffith St. and use the turnaround to go back to the utility company. Park just past the utility company and walk down to the river along the utility company fence. If you walk along the back of the utility company fence there is a rough path through the grass. Look for a clear path down to rocky shoreline of the river and start checking the shorebirds.
