I was hiking around eastern Vilas and northern Forest county Thursday and Friday. I encountered Red Crossbills about a dozen times. I'm sure a few of those were the same flock flying back over me, but I was surprised how many I ran into. Most were associating with red or jack pine. Things were pretty slow otherwise. A good flock of mostly female-type Pine Grosbeaks were still present in Hurley (Iron Co.) a few blocks north of the 51 and Silver St. intersection.
