*Prairie restoration conference will be held in Menomonie* The Prairie Enthusiasts will host an annual conference on Saturday, Feb. 25, 2012 at the UW-Stout campus in Menomonie, WI that will feature a variety of experts presenting on topics covering prairie restoration, ecology, wildlife, and research. The conference is open to the public and activities will be ongoing throughout the entire day. Registration information is available online at: http://www.ThePrairieEnthusiasts.org. ?The conference will be a great opportunity for folks to plug into the extensive knowledge of our best and brightest local conservation gurus,? says Kathy Stahl, president of the Chippewa Savannas Chapter of The Prairie Enthusiasts, ?We?ve worked hard to assemble a great line-up of experts including university professors, DNR biologists, and professional restorationists.? The conference will begin with a keynote presentation by pioneering restoration ecologist Stephen Packard, editor of ?The Tallgrass Restoration Handbook,? and the Director of the National Audubon Society in the Chicago Region. He was a major force in creating the Nachusa Grasslands, 3,000 acres of prairie remnants, restorations, and reconstructions in northern Illinois. Packard will discuss the history of ecological restoration and how conservationists can learn from the past. Following the keynote presentation, the conference features ?Planting a Prairie 101,? an all-day workshop designed specifically for beginners. This workshop offers step-by-step guidance to planting or restoring a native landscape on your property. Concurrently, sessions will run for advanced restorationists, including presentations given by local experts and professionals on topics covering dragonflies and damselflies, restoration design, bird song ear training, invasive species control, fire ecology, and karner blue butterfly conservation. The day will conclude with an evening banquet presentation by nationally-renowned author Dr. Doug Tallamy, Professor of Entomology and Wildlife Ecology and director of the Center for Managed Ecosystems at the University of Delaware. His presentation will interweave beautiful photography with scientific data to explore the many ways insects interact with plants, how such interactions determine the diversity of animal communities, and how residential landscapes can impact biodiversity. He is the author of ?Bringing Nature Home; How Native Plants Sustain Wildlife in Our Gardens,? published by Timber Press in 2007.
