Like many other places in Wisconsin, Stevens Point has been bumping with Pine Grosbeaks lately! I saw a flock of 6 (1 male, 5 female) in a berry tree at the northeast corner of Isadore Street and Fourth Avenue on the UW-Stevens Point campus today from 10:50am-11:05am. I also saw a lone female at the intersection of Arlington Street and Water Street. Tracy Feldman says that he has had several sightings over the past week and a half along Patch Street and Water Street, plus other sites that I cannot remember the name of. He also said that others have seen the birds on campus as well. I observed an American Kestrel today below the Stevens Point dam, as well as on Sunday December 9 in Buena Vista Grasslands. Also at Buena Vista were 1-2 Northern Shrikes and many a Common Redpoll. I help lead Raptor Road Surveys through UW-SP's Wildlife Society. Last year (same effort and time of day/month), we saw many many more raptors, especially Rough-legged Hawks. This year has been significantly worse in terms of numbers and diversity, and we haven't seen a single Rough-legged Hawk. I'm curious if there's a population crash of Meadow Vole or some other small mammal. Good birding!
