We have four Pileateds that come in several times a day to our two different
suet feeders. We think they are mom and dad and the two kids from this past
summer.

Subject: [wisb] Pileateds and suet

Dear Birders:
We have often wondered if pileateds would visit a suet feeder.

A cherry tree in our yard is visited by a pileated several times each year.
It would leave its workings and then wouldn't be seen for weeks or months.
About six days ago one came in and worked on the cherry tree for a good half
hour. Then to our surprise she visited our suet feeder. This feeder is an
arrangement of a 3 to 4 inch segment of tree branch, and half inch wire
cloth. In the past we wondered, could such a bird get its bill far enough
into the wire to get the suet. This bird has answered the question. With
little delicate pecks, it does.

Not only that, but she returned to the suet four days in a row, and was here
again today.

Quite a bird!

Good birding.................... Paul & Glenna
