Thanks to Bill Hartman for directions I birded Three Springs and North Bay today, stopping first at the Osprey nest just south of Ellison Bay in the communication tower. We had noticed birds there all summer and thought the young would be long fledged but I parked under the tower and could hear the young through the car window. An adult came and landed on the nest - I could not see whether she dropped food, but the young continued to be noisy and the adult flew to another tower and rested on a platform with her wings spread as if to dry them. All the time I was there the young were loud but not obvious so I left. My questiion is that looking at the Breeding Bird Atlas the young should have fledged in July and left by August on their migration south. Is this a second brood after maybe a failed first? Anyone out there knows? Three Springs had many cars so I omitted to take my scope down the longish trail thinking other birders were there! Wrong - it was a photography class from the Clearing! So I sat and waited by the marsh for the crowd to leave hoping the Bittern would appear, being entertained by a pair of Solitary Sandpipers - my first of the year! Also hoping a Kingfisher might as I have zipped on those too. After about an hour and a walk along the edge of the Marsh I zipped on the Bittern and went to North Bay. Four Sandhills flew over but didn't like the crowd and a Redstart refused to come to pishing but I saw one on the trail-way out. At North Bay the Great Egret was observed before it ambled further around the bay into reeds to not be seen and a Little Green Heron got up and moved from near me. I stayed a while and a gentleman came and sat beside me who was acquainted with a family that lived just north of us in Walworth as his wife was their mother's sister! Small world - he lives north of Napa where our daughter lives too. It was a beautiful day to bird - just wished there were more around or that I could find them more easily. While in Walworth last week taking our grandchildren back there were Pine Siskins on the feeders mixed in with the Goldfinches/ Hilary Ford, Ellison Bay #################### You received this email because you are subscribed to the Wisconsin Birding Network (Wisbirdn).
